Abstract:
The spring 2020 semester brought forth an historic situation as institutions
were pushed to remote learning in March as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
While some students remained quarantined on campus with access to high-bandwidth internet
and specialized computer labs, others moved back home where access to on-campus resources
and dedicated internet bandwidth was potentially limited – especially for under-resourced students.
In an upper-level database course, access to enterprise database software such as Oracle is critical to
applying key learning outcomes such as relational modeling and SQL.
When access to campus database servers is limited due to being off-campus,
alternative means are necessary to complete course objectives even in the throes of a
global pandemic and emergency remote learning. This work in progress aims to outline
the use case for Oracle’s free Application Express (APEX) environment in the
cloud as part of an upper-level database course in comparison to other available options suitable for database courses.
