The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is designed to give test takers the opportunity to receive college credit for the knowledge they have already acquired through experience or self-study. Since 1993, CLEP has included an Information Systems and Computer Applications exam; approximately 1,500 colleges have established policies offering credit for passing scores from this exam. Recently, the college faculty who serve as the Test Development Committee for the Info Sys exam conducted a curriculum survey of college-level courses in Information Systems. The survey is conducted periodically to ensure that the exam's content is consistent with how the course is taught at universities around the country. As a result of that survey, the committee has implemented a number of changes to the exam to bring it more in line with current best practices in the field. This panel will discuss some of the findings and implications of the curriculum survey, the changing state of the Information Systems course at U.S. colleges both for general studies and major specific uses, changes in expectations and requirements for information systems and computer technology literacy in the early terms, and how this rapidly evolving subject has affected the test development process for the CLEP Info Sys exam and other IS assessments.
