IS Leadership is both art and science. The ability to stay abreast of the technical, global and economic changes that impact IT, without being overwhelmed by them, is a never ending challenge. But more importantly, the shift from doing IT to managing and leading Information Systems is at the core of many IT professional’s most daunting career juncture. The proposed panel will provide an overview of the Executive MS in IS program at Virginia Commonwealth University that we initiated in 2006 with the express intent of building future IS leaders. We believe we have honed in on the three guiding, learning principles that are the keys to the success of our work: •Relevance –the involvement of senior IT Business leaders in creating, co-designing and co-implementing each module of the program; •Intimacy –the pairing and mentoring of each student with a CIO or senior VP mentor and how this influences the way students learn about IS leadership; •Personal Transformation from Doing to Leading– use of The Leadership Circle™ 360 assessment and individualized plan, monthly group coaching, and ongoing leadership development practice into the fabric of the entire program for continuity and maximum impact By attending this panel, participants will learn how we have implemented the program using these themes with best practices, lessons learned and recommendations for others. The early returns, including impacts on leadership capability and career trajectories of our graduates, along with impacts on faculty, the school and the business community at large will be discussed.
