Building an MIS Curriculum for the 21st Century: Some Thoughts

Information Systems (IS) curricula in Business Schools are under constant watch from a variety of constituents. The accrediting and the general university faculty want to ensure that the graduates receive a well-rounded education. The IS graduates themselves and their future employers want to ensure that they are learning current skills that can make them highly productive quickly, in a demanding IS industry. The IS faculty want to ensure that the IS graduate receives a well-rounded education that will last a life-time, as well as current skills that can make the graduate highly productive upon graduation and full-time career employment. This paper presents a comprehensive framework that can be used as a guideline to ensure that the IS graduate receives a well-rounded education, as well as the IS skills that can make the graduate a highly productive employee in a demanding industry. This framework is conceptual in nature so it ensures a strong educational foundation, while affording the faculty the flexibility to design and IS curriculum that optimizes the requirements and constraints from all involved constituents.
