Establishing the Suitability of Dynamic Web Applications Development Platforms for Teaching Remote Database Processing

The availability of many platforms for developing dynamic Web applications suggests the existence of the problem of choosing the most suitable platform for teaching the concepts of web applications development to undergraduate students in tertiary institutions. Students will not perform at their best capacity level if the platform chosen by the institution is not very suitable for teaching the relevant concepts. As part of the framework to determine the most suitable platform for teaching web applications development in tertiary institutions, this study establishes a set of criteria for evaluating the suitability for teaching remote database processing concepts in Web applications. These criteria were tested by evaluating four platforms namely Java Servlets, Java Server Pages, Active Server Pages and PHP using various research methods including descriptive inquiry, document analysis, observations and programming tests. While PHP was found to be most suitable on applying the criteria, the significance of the study lies in the establishment of a comprehensive but specific set of criteria that can be used as a scientific basis for selection.
