Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the education sector through its capabilities to perform personal lesson plans and streamline mundane tasks. However, the successful integration of AI in educational environments depends critically on one key factor: trust. In this literature review, we explore the concept of trust in AI within the educational context and identify four key factors associated with trust in AI, namely transparency, reliability, accuracy, and tangibility. (1) Transparency involves the clarity with which AI systems' processes and decisions are communicated to users. (2) Reliability refers to the consistency with which AI systems perform their intended functions. For AI to be trusted, it must demonstrate dependable performance over time without unexpected failures. (3) Accuracy encompasses the precision and correctness of AI-generated outputs. (4) Tangibility relates to the perceived value and usability of AI tools in practical educational contexts. Users must be able to see and experience the benefits of AI applications in tangible ways to foster trust. Trust in AI systems hinges on their ability to provide accurate information and recommendations that align with educational goals. In addition to the four factors that influence trust, this literature review describes additional concerns regarding the vitality of trust in AI in the education sector including understanding how AI tools make decisions and the data they use, which is crucial for educators and students to feel confident in their use. Related concerns that need to be addressed include clear policies (or rather the lack thereof), bias, fairness, unpredictability, and others. We discuss strategies to mitigate the concerns and foster trust in AI as a transformative tool for education. To further support these conclusions, bibliometric data was compiled based on the existing research that has been published regarding AI in the education realm. This was used to paint a clear picture of existing conclusions given the rapid growth of AI in recent years.
