Abstract
This work addresses the effects of perceived bias in social media, exploring the unintended consequences of necessary and well-intentioned content filtering by machine learning algorithms. Survey data (n = 218) indicates that individuals may appraise social media as biased and interpret that bias as a form of disrespect. Our findings support a relationship between disrespect from social media and derogation of social media, along with expressions of positive distinctiveness associated with the propagation of marginalized opinions.
