Perils and Advantages of Hiring Retired Faculty to Come Back to Teach

Abstract
Universities are under stress to “do more with less” and often “less” means fewer tenure-track faculty. Hiring retired faculty to teach some courses is attractive: a simplified hiring practice, reduced salary, they are already familiar with the university/organization, and usually qualified to accreditation standards. But there are perils. Any field associated with information systems requires instructors to be up to date with the constantly changing curriculum and pedagogy. Also, retired faculty are often cutoff from many of their former university’s applications because it can be a security risk. To evaluate the perils and advantages, we need to understand the dynamic under which universities currently operate.
