Mapping Certificates to Courses: A Preliminary Data Model Proposal
Mark Segall Metropolitan State University of Denver
Abstract Academic departments wanting to help students improve their employment opportunities advise them to pursue third party certifications as a way to demonstrate skills and knowledge to employers. Certifications are also a way for students to start the journey of lifelong learning habits, an important trait for a career in information systems. This paper will start with an outline of the long-term goal to develop an advising tool to allow students to see what industry certifications they can pursue based on the courses they have taken in a given department. This advising tool is envisioned to be web-based with a graphical user interface. A data model is presented to map course objects with certificate objects in support of this mapping advising tool.
