Abstract
With the growing adoption and reliance on digital platforms by consumers globally, many of whom may not be computer savvy, the need to understand and address the use of unethical design practices called “dark patterns” is important. Dark patterns refers to deceptive design practices that influence user behavior and steer users toward specific actions that benefit the digital platform. We present the findings of a comprehensive literature review conducted to understand the current state of the research on dark patterns in website design. We also present our observations from a study on a popular e-commerce platform, as a case in point to connect our observations from the literature with real-world applications of dark patterns. Finally, we propose recommendations for designers, policymakers, and users, advocating for ethical design standards and regulations to combat these manipulative practices and foster a more ethical and safe digital environment.
